A walk-in robe is more than storage. When it's designed well, it changes how your morning feels, unhurried, clear-headed, everything in its place. Here's everything you need to know before briefing a cabinetmaker on the Sunshine Coast.
What makes a walk-in robe worth the investment?
The difference between a great walk-in robe and an average one isn't the size of the space. It's the thought that went into how you actually use it, which shoes you reach for first, whether you prefer long-hang or double-hang, if you need a jewellery drawer or a dedicated bag shelf, and how much natural light the room gets.
Sunshine Coast homes vary enormously, from the generous master suites in Noosa Heads and Sunshine Beach properties, to the compact but cleverly designed bedrooms in Caloundra townhouses. A good walk-in robe works with the room, not against it.
Integrated LED lighting and an island unit make a dressing room feel boutique rather than functional.
Walk-in robe layouts: which suits your space?
Before choosing materials, you need a layout. These are the four most common walk-in robe configurations for Sunshine Coast homes:
What to include in your walk-in robe
Every walk-in robe is different, but here's a planning checklist that covers what most Sunshine Coast homeowners need:
Hanging zones
- Long hang: For dresses, full-length suits, and coats. Minimum 1800mm clearance from rail to floor.
- Double hang: Two rails stacked vertically for shirts, jackets, and folded trousers. More efficient use of height than single long-hang.
- Suit/jacket hang: Single rail at full height, wider spacing, sometimes with a valet rod for layout and planning outfits.
Drawers and storage
- Deep drawers: Folded items, knitwear, T-shirts. Soft-close Blum mechanisms are worth the extra cost, they'll outlast the cabinetry itself.
- Shallow jewellery drawers: Velvet-lined, divided, with a mirror insert on the underside of the drawer above.
- Lingerie trays: Fine dividers, usually 80–100mm deep.
- Tie/belt trays: Pull-out inserts with individual hooks or rolled slots.
Shoe storage
- Angled shoe shelves at 15°, each pair visible, easier to grab.
- Flat shelves if you prefer to see the box or store boots.
- Pull-out shoe drawers for high-heel storage, protects the heel and the shelf finish.
The island unit
If your space allows it, an island unit transforms a walk-in robe from storage room into dressing room. The standard island is 800–900mm wide, 450–500mm deep, 900mm high. Drawers below, a stone or timber top, and often a recessed lower shelf for bag storage underneath. A mirror above the island, either fixed or on a pivot, completes the setup.
Most clients underestimate how much hanging they need and overestimate how many shelves they want. A rough guide: 70% of wardrobe space should be hanging and drawer storage. Shelves are useful but rarely used, the back of a shelf becomes a dead zone within months.
Lighting: the most underrated element
Lighting in a walk-in robe serves two purposes: functional (so you can see colour accurately) and atmospheric (so the room feels like a retreat, not a cupboard).
The best walk-in robe lighting combines:
- LED strip under shelves and beneath the island: casts light into the drawer and shelf cavities, eliminates shadows.
- Downlights on a dimmer: warm white (2700–3000K) for atmosphere, positioned to avoid casting shadows on your face in the mirror.
- A well-lit mirror: either backlit or with vertical light strips either side. Avoid a single overhead light directly above a mirror, it's unflattering and impractical for makeup.
- Sensor activation: LED strip that illuminates when a drawer opens. A small luxury that quickly becomes expected.
Materials: what works in Queensland's climate
Queensland humidity affects cabinetry differently depending on the suburb. Properties in Noosa Heads, Sunrise Beach, and Mooloolaba experience higher salt air exposure than hinterland homes in Buderim or Maleny.
Colour and finish
Two-pack polyurethane in a satin or matt finish is the durability standard for painted interiors. It's harder, more moisture-resistant, and easier to wipe clean than standard lacquer. For a natural look, real timber veneers in American white oak, European oak, or dark walnut remain the most popular choices in Sunshine Coast high-end homes.
Hardware
Invest in Blum drawer runners. The Tandembox Antaro system is the industry benchmark, they open smoothly at any load weight, soft-close reliably, and carry a lifetime warranty. Combined with Grass Nova Pro or Blum Moovit pull-out systems for hanging rails, you're building a robe that will still work perfectly in 25 years.
Dark walnut veneer with dedicated suit hanging and double-hang for shirts, a common brief for Sunshine Coast professional clients.
What does a custom walk-in robe cost on the Sunshine Coast?
Pricing varies significantly based on size, material selections, and the complexity of the brief. Here's an honest range for 2025:
- Small single-wall setup (2.4m–3m wide): $8,000 to $15,000
- L-shape or parallel layout (medium room): $15,000 to $28,000
- U-shape with island (full dressing room): $28,000 to $55,000+
- Premium materials (marble island, solid oak veneer, integrated lighting): add 20–35% to base pricing
The most common mistake clients make is budgeting for the cabinetry but forgetting the electricals. If you want sensor-activated LED strips, integrated mirror lighting, and dimmer-controlled downlights, factor $1,200 to $3,500 for a licensed electrician as a separate cost.
How to brief your cabinetmaker
When you contact us for a consultation, the more prepared you are, the better the result. Here's what to gather before your in-home visit:
- A rough list of what you need to store, categories, quantities, and how you categorise your wardrobe
- Any reference images, Pinterest boards, magazine clippings, photos of wardrobes you've loved in other people's homes
- The room dimensions (we'll remeasure, but knowing these helps frame the conversation)
- Any existing fixtures or features that can't be moved, windows, doors, power points, vents
- A realistic budget range, this lets us guide you toward the best material choices at your price point, not just quote you something generic
A walk-in robe is an enclosed room with its own floor plan, lighting, and dedicated cabinetry. A built-in wardrobe sits within the bedroom wall, usually with sliding or hinged doors. If your bedroom is under 12m², a built-in wardrobe is often the smarter choice. Over 12m², a walk-in robe transforms the entire feel of the master suite.
